An ITS intern investigated the possibility of using OpenVSwitch as a distributed virtual switch, but found that the distributed aspect is not included. The lab assistant attempted to modify Apache VCL to automatically provision VirtualBox VMs, and got as far as being able to save VM images, but not to provision one for a web-based client.

Used Vyatta in a VM, and used VLANs in the physical switch and on the host, to isolate the network activity of student backtrack VMs attacking vulnerable VMs. In addition, captured network packets from PRCCDC 2010 were replayed so that each student VM could sniff the network to see if they could detect what was going on.

Windows 7 VMs with Visual Studio 2010 were needed for this class. They were set up manually, but when it came time to use them, the quirkiness of Microsoft Remote Desktop and the complexity of the .vcl information file made this too difficult to use. for the class.

Consequently, the manage_vc application was created to make it easier to use the information in the .vcl file, to make the use of the remote desktop reliable, and to control access to the virtual computer.

As a pilot project, Phase I was implemented in Spring 2010 for the new TINFO 431 Server-Side Web course. This was a complex environment, where two servers per team and one client computer per team member were desired. There were seven teams (eight with the professor in his own team), with three members per team.

A total of 38 computers were needed, and they were implemented as virtual machines. The servers had Windows Server 2008 installed. One server was the web server, where the students installed IIS 7 with WebDAV support, and the other was the database server, where the students installed SQL Server 2008 Web Edition. The client computers ran Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 Express Edition, and Enterprise Architect installed. The client computers connected to the web root document space via WebDAV, and published their web pages to that WebDAV-connected space.

Faculty use for TCES 330 ? 0 1 1 1 1

In addition to class use, one CES faculty wanted a faster means of running simulations of FPGA designs to demonstrate to his class. A VM running Windows XP and the Altera Design Suite software was created for this purpose.
