Please read the policies below, which govern your login accounts for the School of Engineering and Technology. You will be held accountable for the use of your account.

Use of this account is also subject to rules found at this web site:

http://www.washington.edu/computing/rules

Password Policy

You will be required to change your password after you log in. Please choose another password which has numbers and special characters (such as punctuation characters) in it -- make it difficult for someone to guess your password, but easy for you to remember. You will be required to change your password periodically.

Account Duration Policy

At some point in time, your account will be either disabled or deleted. Disabling an account means that you are not able to login to the account, but your old password and files are intact. Deleting an account removes the account from the system, and deletes all files associated with that account.

Your account may be used during the quarter you are registered at UW Tacoma, or for longer periods of time by special permission. Your account will be disabled automatically 15 calendar days after the end of a quarter.

An account that was automatically disabled can be re-enabled if you are registered AND you request it in person or via email.

Your account will be deleted if you do not register for two consecutive quarters. Since you need to register for a course by the 10th business day of each quarter, this means that your account will be deleted on the 16th calendar day after the beginning of the second quarter.

Example 1: If you register for the winter quarter, but don't register for both the spring quarter and the summer quarter, your account will be deleted 16 calendar days after the beginning of the summer quarter.

Example 2: If you register for the spring quarter, don't register for the summer quarter, and register for the fall quarter, your account will NOT be deleted (it will be disabled, though).

Usage Policy

You are responsible for the use of your account; therefore, do not give your password to anyone or let them use your account. If you need to share information, there are ways to do this without sharing your account.

Backup Policy

You are ultimately responsible for making copies of (i.e., "backing up") any files you create before your account is disabled or deleted.

All files and folders you create should be put on your personal network drive -- the "H:" or "share" drive -- or on removable media which you own. Files and folders placed on the share drive will be backed up by support personnel. Such backups do not last forever -- they will be available for restoration by support personnel for one quarter after your last registered quarter.

For example, if you registered for the winter quarter and stored files on the share drive, they are backed up by support personnel. If you need to restore some files in the spring quarter, you will be able to do so, even if you are not registered for the spring quarter. After the end of the spring quarter, the backups of winter quarter files would no longer be available for restoration.

No files should be placed on the local disk drive (the "C:" drive). Files placed on the local disk will never be backed up; they are deleted when you log out.
