False Authoritative Messages

6 Mar 2002: It has come to our attention that at least two students have been using a system command to send messages to other students or to everyone. These messages appear as a Windows message box and may appear to come from someone in authority. For example:

You can identify which computer (not which login account) sent the message by noting the computer id number after "Message from" (in the example, this is "1176811"). That number is the unique computer name. Computers are named after their UWT asset tag numbers; in some cases, the numbers are preceded by "IT". To find the computer in the lab that matches, use this range to find the room and click on the room number to find the layout:

  • 1176791-1176826, 1197654: DOU110

  • 30026744-30026767: SCI106

  • 1143026-1143040, 30026613-30026614, 3002768-3002771, 1197651-1197652: SCI108

If you are uncertain about the validity of any message, please contact the lab administrator via email or by phone (2-5710 using an on-campus phone; 253-692-5710 off campus).
