New Science Building Labs Opening

17 Nov 2001: Two computing labs will be available for use at the start of Winter Quarter, 2002. They are located in the new Science Building on the first floor. Room 106 (SCI106) will contain 38 computers and a printer, while room 108 (SCI108) will contain 22 computers and a printer.

The majority of these computers are new Dell 330 Precision Workstations (see the specs). They will use Windows 2000 Professional as their operating system. The remainder are the older Dell 410 Precision Workstations, which will be moved from the current Library 222a lab. The older computers will still run Windows NT.

Four of the new computers have special capabilities. Two of those have special hardware and software for video editing -- Pinnacle Systems DV500+ and Adobe Premiere 6.0. The other two computers have high-end graphics cards installed -- nVidia Quadro2 Pro. These new capabilities provide lab users with the ability to digitize and edit academic-oriented video content (perhaps about a computer animation or simulation) and to undertake special graphics-intensive projects.
