Children in Labs

Children are an important part of our lives, and need to be loved, nurtured and protected.

There are some places that are not appropriate or designed to be safe for children. A university laboratory of any kind is such a place.

There are sharp edges, heavy items, sensitive and sometimes fragile equipment, and other situations which are easily and routinely handled by adults, but could be hazardous to inattentive children or be damaged by children. While you are concentrating on your studies and coursework, it is very difficult to attend to what children are doing. If they are sitting in front of a computer logged into your account (which is a violation of the use of your account), they are taking up a seat designed for students and consuming extra state resources (e.g., electricity and network bandwidth) for which you did not pay; the state does not allow you to buy such resources for personal use. Children can also be distractions to students who come to the labs to do some serious thinking and development work.

It is our policy that children are not allowed in the labs except for educational events designed for them and special events when the lab is open to the public.
