Use of Personal Equipment

Personal computer equipment can be used in the lab if all of the following conditions are met:

  1. It will not harm the other equipment or people in the lab.

The equipment must have adequate security/virus protection, filtering of network ports to prevent intrusions, and power protection.

  2. No lab equipment is disconnected to allow your personal equipment to function.

Unplugging cables from hubs, power from power strips, or opening up closed cable trays under the desktops is not allowed. In general, since other people need to use the workstations, we always want them to be ready to use. In addition, unplugging and replugging cords tends to bend pins and ruin equipment.

This means you must find an open network port or electrical outlet.

Be careful with network hubs/switches -- on LinkSys hubs and switches, when looking from the back of the hub where all of the ports can be seen, the second port from the right looks like it is open, but it is unusable. You will probably disable the network for everyone if you plug into that port.

  3. The use is temporary and lasts for only the time that you are present in the lab.

We are not responsible for any equipment you bring into the lab.

  4. It doesn't draw an excessive amount of power.

  5. It is not a wireless hub or switch.

For the sake of network security, we do not allow any wireless hubs or switches to be attached to the campus network.

15 May 2013 Removed restriction on charging device batteries.
7 May 2003 Removed some quarter-specific content, added warning about plugging into hub/switch, and disallowed wireless hubs/switches.
